Dorin Hammond is a Violence Interrupter, Youth Advocate, Mentor and Father. Born and raised in Harlem, he currently works with youth to prevent violence in his community. He utilizes his own childhood and life experiences along with his educational background to help youth deter from negative decisions. He leads by example and is a pillar in his community.
Dorin “Reality” Hammond is a youth activist, a motivational speaker, obtained 13 credits in business administration, and a reformed gang member having served 3 years in prison. He himself being effected by gun violence, brother being shot twice in the stomach. Now Project Coordinator, taking on all the responsibility of running youth mentoring program Next STEPS alongside his brother Dedric “Beloved” Hammond. Reality and his team reduce killings and shootings in the same neighborhoods he once caused havoc in. Next STEPS-St Nicholas is a Violence Prevention Youth Mentoring Program of the Department of Probation and NYCHA is based on the Arches Youth Mentoring model of alternatives to incarceration and counter acting recidivism, engaging youth before they become justice involved. Next S.T.E.P.S (Striving. Towards. Engagement. and Peaceful. Solutions) is a program that focus on reducing violence in St Nicholas housing development, stopping disputes before they escalate to gun violence and helping young people make better choices in their lives.
He has completed many trainings and accomplishments including: Therapeutic Community, Change Agent, Up-standers, Domestic Violence, Facilitation Skills, Restorative Justice Peace Circles, Mentor Supervisor Course, Cure Violence-Violence Interrupter/Outreach Worker, Pitch and Public Speaking, Positive Youth Development, Incredible Messenger Institute Graduate, Say YES Center Certificate, Worknet Job Readiness, Healthy Relationships Training, Gang Awareness, Professional Development, Cognitive Behavioral Techniques, Mentor New York-How to Design and Manage a Successful Mentoring Program, Adult Development, Cultural Competence Training, LGBTQ Gender Training, and Hands on Hospital Responder Training facilitated by Dedric “Beloved” Hammond. These trainings have contributed not only to his personal transformation, but the transformation of the young people he works with. Although Reality was once was part of the problem he now lives a life of redemption transforming lives and being the solution.
